WHY DOES IT FAIL?
Symptoms of a FAULTY JEEP CHEROKEE ABS
The Jeep Cherokee has no dedicated list of ABS fault codes visible to the driver: the fault is detected through the symptoms it causes, especially on higher-mileage units or those frequently used off-road. The most common on this model are:
ABS warning light permanently on
The ABS warning light stays on in the instrument cluster and does not go off even if you restart the engine, a sign that the module has detected an internal fault.
Brake pedal with irregular travel or harder
The pedal sinks further than normal or is harder to press, due to a loss of pressure in the braking system’s hydraulic circuit.
The vehicle pulls to one side when braking
One wheel brakes earlier or harder than the rest, which is especially noticeable on wet surfaces or under sudden braking.
Traction control or stability warning light on
It comes on together with the ABS light because both systems usually share the same electro-hydraulic control unit.
Intermittent fault after off-road use
Dirt tracks, mud and fording puddles expose the wheel sensors and the control unit itself to vibration and moisture that can loosen connections or damage internal components.
The ABS does not intervene in emergency braking
The wheels lock under hard braking because the system has stopped working, which increases the braking distance.
