Motorcycle ABS module repair for BMW MOTORRAD
We repair the ABS module on any BMW Motorrad motorcycle: the ABS 2 on the nineties K and R models, the Integral ABS on the R 1150 and R 1200 and the ABS Pro on current GS models. We receive your control unit, remanufacture it and return it to you bench-tested. If the ABS and brake warning lights come on at the same time and the lever suddenly goes hard, it’s the module. No upfront payment: we repair first and charge afterwards.
Test-bench diagnosis of your own unitwe tell you what has failed before touching anything.
CHECK BEFORE YOU SEND IT
We’ll tell you whether your module can be repaired and how much it will cost before you remove it.
- Find the sticker on the module. On R and K models with Integral ABS it is under the tank or behind the right-hand side fairing; on F and S models, on the swingarm or under the seat.
- Take a photo of the sticker and the connector. The part number and the connector identify the unit and its generation.
- We reply with a diagnosis and a price. If it can’t be repaired, we tell you before you send it.

WHY DOES IT FAIL?
Symptoms of a faulty ABS module on your BMW Motorrad
Spotting an ABS fault on a BMW Motorrad in time saves you from being left without braking assistance just when you need it. These are the signs we see most often at the workshop:
ABS warning light on in the instrument panel
The ABS warning light stays on after starting or comes on while riding, indicating that the ECU has detected a fault.
False or intermittent ABS activation
The brake lever pulses or vibrates under normal braking for no apparent reason.
Speedometer failure or erratic reading
The speedometer shows incorrect or intermittent values or stops working, alongside the ABS fault.
ABS system in failsafe mode (self-disabled)
The system switches itself off automatically and the bike reverts to conventional braking without ABS assistance.
The ABS does not act under hard braking (wheel lock)
The wheel locks when braking hard despite the ABS system being fitted, increasing the risk of a fall.
Abnormal brake lever feel
Hard or spongy lever, or one with irregular travel.
Unusual noise around the wheel (sensor/tone ring)
Clicks, humming or rubbing coming from the wheel sensor or the toothed ring.
Longer braking distance / loss of control in an emergency
The system does not effectively correct wheel slip during emergency braking.
The three generations of BMW Motorrad ABS
BMW has not fitted a single system: over more than thirty years it has gone through three architectures that are diagnosed and repaired differently. Finding out which one your motorbike has is the first thing we do when we receive a module.
-
1988 – 2000 ABS 2
The first series-production ABS ever fitted to a motorcycle. It regulates the two circuits independently and is recognisable by its bulky unit and period electronics.
ModelsK 100, K 1100, R 1100 GS / RS / RT, R 850 R and R 1100 R.
Typical faultsCircuit board tracks and capacitors, plus seized relays and modulators on motorcycles that have stood unused for a long time. Almost always electrical rather than hydraulic.
-
2001 – 2014 The one we see most at the workshop Integral ABS
Combined, power-assisted braking, with Bosch and Continental units: the hydraulic unit itself generates the pressure and distributes it between the two axles. If the module fails you don’t just lose the anti-lock function, you lose the assistance entirely and the lever suddenly goes hard.
ModelsR 1150 GS / RT / RS, first-generation R 1200 GS and RT, K 1200 GT / RS / LT.
Typical faultsPressure sensors, pump motor power supply and internal corrosion after years of out-of-date brake fluid.
-
Since 2016 ABS Pro
Adds lean angle: an inertial measurement unit measures how far the motorcycle is leaning and the module adjusts the pressure so you can brake in a corner without the wheel sliding out.
ModelsR 1250 GS, S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR, F 900 R and F 900 XR.
Typical faultsLoss of communication with the inertial measurement unit or with the engine control unit, and pressure sensors out of range. Less hydraulic than the previous generations.
