WHY DOES IT FAIL?
ALFA 156 ABS FAULT symptoms
The Alfa Romeo 156 has no catalogue of ABS fault codes of its own: the fault is identified by the symptoms it causes. The most common on this model are:
ABS warning light on
It stays on permanently on the dashboard, or flashes intermittently with no recognisable pattern.
Hard or spongy brake pedal
The pedal travel changes from normal: harder to press or with a longer stroke than usual.
Inconsistent braking between wheels
The car pulls to one side under braking because one wheel is receiving more or less braking force than the others.
Traction control or ESP warning light on
It usually comes on together with the ABS light, since both systems share the same electronic control unit.
Intermittent warning
The warning light goes off and comes back on for no apparent reason, a typical symptom of connectors corroded by the age of the vehicle.
Loss of assistance in emergency braking
The system does not step in to prevent the wheels from locking under hard braking, just when it is needed most.
