WHY DOES IT FAIL?

Symptoms of a Hyundai ABS fault

Spotting a Hyundai ABS fault in time can prevent accidents and bigger repairs. An illuminated Hyundai ABS warning light on the dashboard is the warning we hear about most at the workshop, but it rarely comes alone. A faulty ABS on a Hyundai can show up in several ways; the most common signs include:

ABS warning light on

The Hyundai ABS warning light stays on in the instrument cluster, often alongside the ESP or brake warning light.

Steering angle sensor fault

The unit logs C1290 or U0126: the steering angle sensor fails or stops communicating, the ESP is left without that data and drags the ABS down with it.

Unpredictable braking

The braking system does not respond as it should. DTC reading and testing of every hydraulic and electronic channel.

Hard brake pedal

You notice heavy resistance or irregular travel when pressing the pedal, indicating a fault in the pump motor of your Hyundai’s ABS unit, logged as C2402.

Hyundai ABS repair FAQs

Yes, and it is much more common than you might think. During a wheel alignment the steering wheel is turned from lock to lock, and the steering angle sensor can lose its calibration or its zero reference; the control unit stores this as C1290 (steering angle sensor fault or damage) or as U0126 (lost communication with that sensor). Because the ESP needs to know where the wheels are pointing to decide whether the car is leaving its line, it switches off as soon as it loses that data and drags the ABS with it, which is why both warning lights come on at once; if C1503 also appears, the fault is in the ESP switch module itself. The first step is to recalibrate the sensor with diagnostic equipment: if the code comes back with the sensor correctly calibrated, the problem is inside the control unit, and that is where we come in.

The concept is the same, but the unit is not interchangeable. A 2007 Santa Fe belongs to the second generation (CM) and is fitted with an ABS/ESP unit with its own part number, different from the one on current Santa Fe models, which is why anyone searching for “Hyundai Santa Fe 2007 ABS module” won’t find the same parts breakdown as for a recent model. For us, on the other hand, little changes: the faults it logs are the usual ones — wheel sensors in the C1200 to C1211 series, traction control valves and the pump motor — and the repair is just as viable as on a modern car. The only essential thing is the part number on the module’s label, because that is what reliably identifies which unit you have; the year and model alone are not enough.

It can be, and it is worth ruling it out before writing the module off as faulty. The brake pedal switch is what tells the control unit that you are braking; when it fails, the system logs C1513 and disables the ABS as a precaution even if the hydraulic side is perfect. The clue is in the brake lights: if they do not come on, stay on or flicker, the suspect is the switch, a cheap part that is quick to replace and also tends to move out of position when the pedal is adjusted. If the lights work properly and the code keeps coming back after replacing it, then what is failing is the stage inside the ABS module that receives that signal, and that really is a control unit repair.

The car brakes, but it does not brake the same way. With the warning light on, the ABS is disabled: the conventional hydraulic circuit keeps working, so in normal braking you will not notice anything, but you lose the anti-lock function, and that means that in an emergency stop or on a wet road the wheels can lock and you can no longer steer around an obstacle while braking. What is more, in a Sonata the ABS shares a unit with the ESP and traction control, so you will usually lose those too, even if their warning lights do not make it so obvious. You can drive carefully to the garage, but it is not a fault to leave for later: it is an active safety feature and a reason to fail the MOT.

It depends on the year and above all on the version, because at that time ABS was an extra rather than standard equipment. Hyundai introduced it in the mid-eighties on its large models, the Grandeur and Sonata, and it gradually worked its way down the range: the first Pony and Excel did not have it, whereas the later series and many Galloper models did have it from the factory, almost always as an option and not on every trim level. The quick way to find out is to check whether the ABS warning light comes on when you switch on the ignition and goes off by itself, and whether there is a hydraulic unit next to the brake servo. If your car left the factory with ABS, we repair its unit exactly as we would one from a current model; what we do not do is install a system on a car that never had one.

It is one of the questions we get most often and it almost always has a simple explanation. Hyundai’s wheel sensor codes —from C1200 to C1211, depending on the wheel and the type of fault— do not distinguish between a broken sensor and a healthy one that reads incorrectly, so all it takes is for the new part to have been left with play, twisted, dirty or with the connector not properly seated for the fault to persist. It is also worth checking the toothed ring on the hub, which is often rusty or has a damaged tooth, and clearing the old codes, because many stay stored and do not go out by themselves even when the fault no longer exists. If after all that the same code comes back, what is failing is the input stage of that channel inside the module, and that is a repair we carry out every day.

Because ABS stopped being a standalone system a long time ago. Even though an i10 or an Atos are simple cars, their brake control unit also manages traction control and stability, and for that it needs far more information than just the speed of the four wheels: hence codes such as C1213 and C1245 (traction control sensor), C1283 (yaw sensor, the one that measures whether the car is turning more or less than you are asking with the steering wheel) or C1274 (longitudinal acceleration sensor). They all hang off the same unit, so a fault in any of them shuts down the entire ABS even if the four wheel sensors are perfect, and that is why a fault that seems minor leaves the car with several warning lights on. The advantage of everything being integrated is that, by repairing the module, the whole system is restored in one go.
