1 SERIES MODULE

BMW 1 SERIES ABS

We repair the BMW 1 Series ABS module by returning your own ABS/DSC unit remanufactured, with the hydraulic unit and the circuit board restored. We cover every generation of the 1 Series: the first, E81/E87 (3 and 5 doors), E82 (coupé, including the exclusive 1M) and E88 (convertible), as well as the second-generation F20/F21, in both diesel and petrol versions, with no need to recode the control unit or rely on a scrapyard part of uncertain compatibility. These are the BMW 1 Series versions for which we repair the ABS module. Each one may be fitted with a different module: choose yours and we will show you the one it uses. If you cannot find your car, contact us and we will help.

We can't find that model. Escríbenos with the module's part number and we'll tell you if we can repair it.

Not every 1 Series has the same ABS: depending on the version and year, it is fitted with one module or another.

  • Standard ABS module

WHY DOES IT FAIL?

BMW 1 SERIES ABS FAULT symptoms

The BMW 1 Series does not log its own catalogue of ABS fault codes visible to the user: the fault is detected by the symptoms it causes. The most common on this model, especially on higher-mileage E87 cars, are:

ABS warning light permanently on

The ABS warning light stays on in the instrument cluster and does not go off even if you restart the engine, a sign that the control unit has detected an internal fault.

Harder brake pedal or longer travel

The pedal sinks further than usual or is harder to press, due to a loss of pressure in the hydraulic circuit.

The car pulls to one side when braking

One wheel brakes earlier or harder than the rest, especially noticeable on wet surfaces or under hard braking.

DSC/traction control warning light on

It comes on together with the ABS light because both systems depend on the same electro-hydraulic unit in the 1 Series.

Intermittent wheel sensor fault (common on the E87)

On E81/E87 cars it is common for the magnetic ring of the E87 ABS sensor to corrode or get damaged, causing erratic readings and the warning light to come on intermittently.

The ABS does not intervene in emergency braking

The wheels lock when braking hard because the system has stopped working, increasing the braking distance.

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.

Well, 3 months ago they repaired a Seat León module for me, and from the very first moment they treated me in a super professional way. They were quick with the repair and practical with collecting the part and delivering it. No problems so far, I recommend them one hundred per cent.

BMW 1 SERIES ABS repair FAQs

The only reliable way is to run a diagnosis with BMW-compatible equipment, such as ISTA, INPA or an advanced scanner. If specific codes appear, such as 5DF0 or 5DF1 (pump motor fault), or recurring errors from the internal pressure sensors (5E20), the problem usually lies in the DSC’s own electronic or hydraulic unit, and you will need a BMW 1 Series module repair rather than replacing an external component.

The clearest symptom is the ABS, traction control (DSC) and handbrake warning lights coming on at the same time on the instrument cluster, known as the “trifecta”. The conventional brakes will still stop the vehicle, but you will lose anti-lock assistance in emergency braking and stability control in corners.

Wheel sensor faults throw specific directional codes, such as 5D90 or 5DA0. Before suspecting the central module, it is worth checking the E87 ABS sensor and the magnetic ring on the drive shaft: on E87 models it is very common for that ring to rust, swell and end up rubbing against or breaking the sensor head. Repairing the drive shaft and replacing the sensor is a far cheaper job than touching the module.

In the vast majority of cases it is possible, and highly advisable, to rebuild the original part. Repairing the pump motor brushes, which fixes fault 5DF0/5DF1, or restoring the internal solder joints on the circuit board solves the chronic BMW E87 ABS problems for a fraction of what it costs to have a complete module fitted at the dealer.

The diagnosis process and the system architecture are identical, but the DSC module of an M1 ABS (or of any version with M Sport equipment) carries different coding and valve calibration, designed for sportier, more demanding use. The repair keeps your original unit so these settings are not lost; if you fit a replacement unit instead, advanced recoding will be required.

If you send us your own module and we return it repaired, the process is plug & play at software level: it keeps your chassis number (VIN) and your configuration. You will only need to bleed the brake fluid circuit properly, clear the old fault codes and, in some cases, recalibrate the steering angle sensor. If, on the other hand, you fit a scrapyard module, reprogramming and VIN coding are mandatory.

Once the BMW 1 Series ABS module reaches our repair technical centre, diagnosis, rebuild and bench testing are usually completed within 24 to 48 hours. We offer a 12-month warranty on the repaired part, extendable to 24, because we do not just fix the fault: we replace the factory components prone to failure with reinforced alternatives.
