Symptoms of a FAULTY FIAT PUNTO ABS

The Fiat Punto has no dedicated catalogue of ABS fault codes accessible to the user: the fault is identified through the symptoms it causes. These are the most common signs of an ABS fault on the Fiat Punto:

ABS warning light permanently on in the instrument cluster

The ABS warning light stays permanently on in the instrument cluster. Before blaming the module, check the brake fluid level and the battery condition: low voltage can switch this warning light on without there being any real fault in the control unit.

Hard brake pedal or irregular pedal travel

The pedal requires more effort in some braking manoeuvres or responds differently from one moment to the next, a sign that the control unit is no longer regulating the pressure in the hydraulic circuit correctly.

Inconsistent braking between wheels

One wheel brakes earlier or harder than the others, which is more noticeable under sudden braking or when driving on wet roads.

Noise from the pump or hydraulic unit when braking

A humming or rattling noise coming from the hydraulic unit when you press the brake usually indicates an internal fault in the ABS module’s pump motor.

Corroded connectors on older Punto 188 models

On Fiat Punto 188 models with more years and miles behind them, it is common for the module connectors to corrode or for the control unit’s internal components to degrade, causing intermittent faults that do not always recur in the same way.

    Die Abwicklung der Reparatur meines defekten ABS Modul (2003er BMW R1150GS) war sehr einfach, schnell und kompetent. Wenn man auf der Website den Reparaturauftrag erteilt hat, dann sollte man einen Screenshot vom Auftrag machen, denn ich habe keine schriftliche Bestätigung erhalten. Ist aber kein Problem. Achtet auf die Preise - auf der Website ist Netto angegeben, kann überraschen, weil wir es in D nicht gewohnt sind, mit Nettopreisen einzukaufen. Incl Transportversicherung betrugen die Reparaturkosten somit ca. 900 Euro, deutlich günstiger als andere Angebote. Das Gerät würde pünktlich, wie vereinbart, von einer Spedition 2 Tage nach Auftragserteilung an einem Mittwoch abgeholt und nach Spanien geschickt. Am folgenden Dienstag erhielt ich bereits die Info, dass die Reparatur fertig gestellt wurde. Super schnell. Ich habe überwiesen und den Screenshot der Überweisung mitgeschickt. So wurde das ABS bereits am darauf folgenden Mittwoch zurück gesendet und war am Montag wierder zu Hause. Das Ganze dauerte keine zwei Wochen. Das Gerät funktioniert wieder einwandfrei.

First of all, it is worth checking the brake fluid level and the condition of the battery, as low voltage can activate the ABS warning light without there being a real fault in the module. If these points are fine and the warning light persists, the fault is most likely in the control unit itself or in one of the wheel speed sensors.

Yes, it is a factor to bear in mind. Use on tracks, rough dirt roads or dustier, damper surfaces exposes both the wheel sensors and the ABS control unit itself to tougher conditions than normal urban use, which can accelerate wear on the internal components over time.

Yes, the two models are fitted with different ABS modules, each with its own part number and in some cases a different supplier. That is why it is important to identify correctly which version you have and, if possible, the exact part number of your control unit before going ahead with the repair, to guarantee compatibility.

As well as the ABS warning light being on in the instrument cluster, you may notice a brake pedal with irregular travel or that is harder than normal, inconsistent braking between wheels, or strange noises coming from the pump or hydraulic unit when braking.

Repairing the original module is usually the safest and most economical option, especially on a model as widespread as the Punto. Second-hand modules are not always correctly coded for your specific vehicle, whereas the repair returns your own module working like new, with a warranty and no compatibility issues.
