RENAULT SCÉNIC ABS FAULT Symptoms

The Renault Scénic has no catalogue of ABS fault codes visible to the user: the fault is identified by the symptoms it causes day to day, especially on Scénic 1 and Scénic 2 cars that have already clocked up quite a few years of use. If you want to check the Renault Scenic ABS yourself before going to the garage, these are the most common symptoms:

ABS warning light permanently on

On many cars, the Renault Scenic ABS warning light stays on steadily in the instrument cluster and doesn’t go out after restarting the engine, a sign that the control unit has detected a persistent internal fault.

Inconsistent braking between wheels

The car pulls to one side when braking or one wheel locks before the others, a typical symptom when the Renault Scenic ABS module isn’t managing the pressure in each brake circuit correctly.

Harder brake pedal or irregular pedal travel

    Die Abwicklung der Reparatur meines defekten ABS Modul (2003er BMW R1150GS) war sehr einfach, schnell und kompetent. Wenn man auf der Website den Reparaturauftrag erteilt hat, dann sollte man einen Screenshot vom Auftrag machen, denn ich habe keine schriftliche Bestätigung erhalten. Ist aber kein Problem. Achtet auf die Preise - auf der Website ist Netto angegeben, kann überraschen, weil wir es in D nicht gewohnt sind, mit Nettopreisen einzukaufen. Incl Transportversicherung betrugen die Reparaturkosten somit ca. 900 Euro, deutlich günstiger als andere Angebote. Das Gerät würde pünktlich, wie vereinbart, von einer Spedition 2 Tage nach Auftragserteilung an einem Mittwoch abgeholt und nach Spanien geschickt. Am folgenden Dienstag erhielt ich bereits die Info, dass die Reparatur fertig gestellt wurde. Super schnell. Ich habe überwiesen und den Screenshot der Überweisung mitgeschickt. So wurde das ABS bereits am darauf folgenden Mittwoch zurück gesendet und war am Montag wierder zu Hause. Das Ganze dauerte keine zwei Wochen. Das Gerät funktioniert wieder einwandfrei.

RENAULT SCÉNIC ABS repair FAQS

First of all, it is worth checking the brake fluid level and the condition of the battery, as low voltage can activate the ABS warning light without there being a real fault in the module. If these points are fine and the warning light persists, the fault is most likely in the control unit itself or in one of the wheel speed sensors.

Yes, the two generations are fitted with different ABS modules, each with its own part number and in some cases a different supplier. That’s why it’s important to correctly identify which generation you have and, if possible, the exact part number of your control unit before going ahead with the repair, to guarantee compatibility.

Yes, it’s quite common: over the years and the miles, the ABS module connectors can corrode or the internal components of the control unit can degrade, causing faults that don’t always recur consistently. It’s one of the most frequent faults on Scénics of this generation.

You can check whether the warning light stays on after starting the engine, whether there are strange noises or vibrations when braking, or use an OBD reader to check the fault codes stored in the control unit. If the warning light does not go off, the most reliable option is a professional diagnosis of the module.

As well as the ABS warning light on the dashboard, you may notice a brake pedal with irregular travel or that is harder than normal, inconsistent braking between wheels, or the ESP warning light on at the same time, since both systems share the same control unit in most cases.
