RENAULT KANGOO ABS FAULT Symptoms

The Renault Kangoo has no catalogue of ABS fault codes visible to the user: the fault is identified by the symptoms it causes day to day. If you want to check the Renault Kangoo ABS module yourself before going to the garage, these are the most common symptoms, especially on higher-mileage commercial vans:

ABS warning light permanently on

The ABS warning light stays on in your Kangoo’s instrument cluster and doesn’t go out even when you restart the engine, a sign that the control unit has detected a persistent internal fault.

Harder brake pedal or irregular pedal travel

The pedal sinks further than usual or is harder to press, due to a loss of pressure or efficiency in the ABS hydraulic circuit — more noticeable when the van is loaded.

Inconsistent braking with the Kangoo loaded

Brake force distribution between the wheels becomes uneven when the van is carrying a load or goods, one of the first symptoms of an ABS module that is starting to fail in a commercial and delivery vehicle.

ESP warning light on together with the ABS light

It comes on at the same time as the ABS warning light because both systems share the same electro-hydraulic control unit in the Renault Kangoo.

Intermittent fault due to corroded connectors

On older, higher-mileage vans used for commercial or delivery work, the ABS module connectors can corrode, causing faults that don’t always recur consistently.

The ABS does not intervene in emergency braking

The wheels lock under hard braking because the system has stopped working, increasing the braking distance — especially critical with the van loaded.

    Die Abwicklung der Reparatur meines defekten ABS Modul (2003er BMW R1150GS) war sehr einfach, schnell und kompetent. Wenn man auf der Website den Reparaturauftrag erteilt hat, dann sollte man einen Screenshot vom Auftrag machen, denn ich habe keine schriftliche Bestätigung erhalten. Ist aber kein Problem. Achtet auf die Preise - auf der Website ist Netto angegeben, kann überraschen, weil wir es in D nicht gewohnt sind, mit Nettopreisen einzukaufen. Incl Transportversicherung betrugen die Reparaturkosten somit ca. 900 Euro, deutlich günstiger als andere Angebote. Das Gerät würde pünktlich, wie vereinbart, von einer Spedition 2 Tage nach Auftragserteilung an einem Mittwoch abgeholt und nach Spanien geschickt. Am folgenden Dienstag erhielt ich bereits die Info, dass die Reparatur fertig gestellt wurde. Super schnell. Ich habe überwiesen und den Screenshot der Überweisung mitgeschickt. So wurde das ABS bereits am darauf folgenden Mittwoch zurück gesendet und war am Montag wierder zu Hause. Das Ganze dauerte keine zwei Wochen. Das Gerät funktioniert wieder einwandfrei.

RENAULT KANGOO ABS repair FAQS

First of all, it is worth checking the brake fluid level and the condition of the battery, as low voltage can activate the ABS warning light without there being a real fault in the module. If these points are fine and the warning light persists, the fault is most likely in the control unit itself or in one of the wheel speed sensors.

Yes, it’s a factor to bear in mind. Frequent use with heavy loads or delivery rounds with constant braking puts the hydraulic unit and the wheel sensors under more wear than lighter private use, which can speed up the deterioration of the module’s internal components over time.

As well as the ABS warning light on the dashboard, you may notice a brake pedal with irregular travel or that is harder than normal, inconsistent braking between wheels, or the ESP warning light on at the same time, since both systems share the same control unit in most cases.

Yes, it’s quite common: with the passing years, the accumulated miles and the intensive use typical of a van, the ABS module connectors can corrode or the internal components of the control unit can degrade, causing faults that don’t always recur consistently.
