SMART FORTWO ABS

We repair the Smart Fortwo ABS module and return your own remanufactured ABS control unit, with the circuit board and, where necessary, the hydraulic unit restored. Our Smart Fortwo ABS repair service covers all three generations of the model: the first, W450 (1998-2007); the second, W451 (2007-2014); and the current one, W453 (from 2014), first identifying the exact part number of your module to guarantee compatibility after the repair. Before removing anything it’s worth ruling out a false alarm: the Fortwo’s electrical system is particularly sensitive to a battery with low voltage, which can turn the ABS warning light on without there being a real fault in the control unit. We work on the petrol versions and the cdi diesel, with no need to recode the control unit or rely on a breaker’s yard spare of uncertain compatibility. SMART FORTWO ABS FAULT Symptoms

The Smart Fortwo has no catalogue of ABS fault codes visible to the user: the fault is identified by the symptoms it causes day to day, especially on older, higher-mileage cars still on the road. If you want to check the Smart Fortwo ABS module yourself before going to the garage, these are the most common symptoms:

ABS warning light on even with a weak battery

On the Fortwo, a battery with low voltage can trigger a “false” ABS warning light during the driving cycle, without there being a real fault in the control unit — it’s worth ruling this out before suspecting the module.

Communication fault with the Sprintshift gearbox

When the ABS fails at the same time as faults appear in the Sprintshift gearbox, the cause usually lies in the communication network shared by both systems, not in two independent faults.

Harder brake pedal or irregular pedal travel

The pedal sinks further than normal or is harder to press, a sign of a loss of pressure in the hydraulic circuit of the Fortwo’s control unit.

ESP warning light on together with the ABS light

Both warning lights usually come on at the same time because they share the same electro-hydraulic control unit on the Fortwo, and braking loses anti-lock assistance and stability control simultaneously.

Intermittent fault due to corroded connectors

Given the average age of the Fortwos still on the road, the ABS module connectors can corrode or the internal components of the control unit can degrade, causing faults that don’t always recur consistently.

    Die Abwicklung der Reparatur meines defekten ABS Modul (2003er BMW R1150GS) war sehr einfach, schnell und kompetent. Wenn man auf der Website den Reparaturauftrag erteilt hat, dann sollte man einen Screenshot vom Auftrag machen, denn ich habe keine schriftliche Bestätigung erhalten. Ist aber kein Problem. Achtet auf die Preise - auf der Website ist Netto angegeben, kann überraschen, weil wir es in D nicht gewohnt sind, mit Nettopreisen einzukaufen. Incl Transportversicherung betrugen die Reparaturkosten somit ca. 900 Euro, deutlich günstiger als andere Angebote. Das Gerät würde pünktlich, wie vereinbart, von einer Spedition 2 Tage nach Auftragserteilung an einem Mittwoch abgeholt und nach Spanien geschickt. Am folgenden Dienstag erhielt ich bereits die Info, dass die Reparatur fertig gestellt wurde. Super schnell. Ich habe überwiesen und den Screenshot der Überweisung mitgeschickt. So wurde das ABS bereits am darauf folgenden Mittwoch zurück gesendet und war am Montag wierder zu Hause. Das Ganze dauerte keine zwei Wochen. Das Gerät funktioniert wieder einwandfrei.

SMART FORTWO ABS repair FAQS

First of all, it’s worth checking the brake fluid level and the condition of the battery, as low voltage can trigger the ABS warning light without there being a real fault in the module. Smarts are particularly sensitive to this: a weak battery during the driving cycle can trigger a “false” code without there being a real fault in the control unit.
