WHY DOES IT FAIL?
Smart ABS fault symptoms
Spotting a Smart ABS fault in time can prevent accidents and bigger repairs. The Smart ABS warning light on in the instrument cluster is the warning we hear about most at the workshop, and with this make it is worth ruling out the simple things first: a battery with a low charge during the drive cycle can falsely trigger a module fault code. When the fault is real, a Smart ABS sensor that stops sending a signal, a code with no documented definition or a loss of communication on the CAN network can show up in several ways. The most common signs of a faulty ABS on a Smart are:
ABS warning light on
The Smart ABS warning light stays on in the instrument cluster even though the car still brakes normally. Before looking at the control unit, it is worth checking the battery charge: on a Smart, a low battery during the drive cycle can falsely trigger an ABS module fault code.
DTC code with no standard definition
The cluster logs C1503 or C1443, two codes reported on the Smart Fortwo for which there is no confirmed official definition: without a reliable description, the OBD reader is not enough and the module’s circuit board has to be physically inspected.
Unpredictable braking
The braking system does not respond as it should. DTC reading and testing of every hydraulic and electronic channel.
Loss of communication on the CAN network
The diagnostic tool logs C1316 and the Sprintshift module stops talking to the rest of the car over the CAN network: on your Smart this fault appears alongside ABS/ESP codes because the three systems share the same communication network.

TYPICAL SMART ABS FAULTS WE REPAIR
Most common Smart DTC codes
Reported on a real 2008 Smart Fortwo — no confirmed definition (according to the user, not even Alldata documented it)
Reported on a real 2008 Smart Fortwo — no confirmed definition
CAN communication fault with the Sprintshift module (semi-automatic gearbox) — reported alongside ABS/ESP codes on a 2009 Fortwo
A low battery during the drive cycle can falsely trigger this code — testing the battery charge is recommended before replacing parts
