WHY DOES IT FAIL?

Symptoms of a Honda ABS fault

Spotting a Honda ABS fault in time can prevent accidents and bigger repairs. An illuminated Honda ABS warning light on the dashboard is the warning we hear about most at the workshop, but it rarely comes alone. A faulty ABS on a Honda can show up in several ways; the most common signs include:

ABS warning light on

The Honda ABS warning light stays on in the instrument cluster, often alongside the VSA or brake warning light.

Internal ABS module fault

The unit logs codes in the 31 to 38 series, solenoid valve short circuits that reveal a fault inside the modulator rather than in the wheel sensor.

Unpredictable braking

The braking system does not respond as it should. DTC reading and testing of every hydraulic and electronic channel.

Hard brake pedal

You notice heavy resistance or irregular travel when pressing the pedal, indicating a fault in your Honda’s ABS pump, logged as codes 51 to 53.

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.

Well, 3 months ago they repaired a Seat León module for me, and from the very first moment they treated me in a super professional way. They were quick with the repair and practical with collecting the part and delivering it. No problems so far, I recommend them one hundred per cent.

Honda ABS repair FAQs

Yes, it may be directly related. The ABS module calculates the speed of each wheel from the sensor pulses, so if you fit tyres with a different diameter from the original or mix sizes between axles, the readings no longer match each other and the system stores it as code 71 (tyre size or diameter discrepancy). Before writing off the control unit, it is worth checking that all four wheels have the approved size, the same pressure and similar wear. If the code keeps appearing with the correct sizes, the problem lies in the sensor or inside the module itself.

The HR-V of that generation has no declared factory defect, but it is one of the models we see most, which is why many people search directly for “Honda HR-V 2016 ABS module”. Typically the warning light comes on with wheel sensor codes (11, 13, 15 or 17) or with valve short circuits in the 31 to 38 series, which already point to the inside of the modulator rather than the sensor. In almost every case the unit can be repaired: there’s no need to buy a new module, just send us yours stating the year and the part number on the label.

It is almost always a single fault with two warnings. The VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) works with the same wheel speed signals and the same power supply as the ABS, so when the sensor supply voltage drops — code 64, typical of the 4WD versions — the dashboard turns on both warning lights at once. Normally, repairing the ABS module turns both off; we would only be looking at two separate faults if the VSA also stores codes of its own, such as those for the steering angle sensor or the yaw sensor.

It is the same car with two trade names: Honda sells it as the Jazz in Europe and as the Fit in Japan, the Americas and much of Asia, so the ABS system is the same and so is the repair. What does change between markets and generations is the unit’s part number, because it depends on the equipment (with or without VSA, engine type, hybrid version). So if you search for a spare as “Honda Fit ABS” and your car is a Jazz, or vice versa, what counts is the part number on the module’s label, not the name the car was sold under in your country.

Repair is worth it whenever the damage is in the electronics or the hydraulic part of the module, which is the vast majority of cases: repairing costs roughly a quarter of what a new unit would cost, and you keep your own module, already coded for your car and with no compatibility problems. Replacement only makes sense when the hydraulic body is cracked or corroded beyond recovery. At Nito Motor there is no upfront payment: we first inspect and repair the unit, and you only pay for the service once it has been tested, with a 1-year warranty.

Yes, although the diagnosis is done differently. Hondas from the 80s and 90s do not report ABS faults through generic OBD2: the ALB system stores them as two-digit codes, which are read by counting the warning light’s flashes after bridging the service connector, not with a standard reader. That is why on a CRX or a Prelude you will see codes such as 11, 15 or 51 instead of a C1105. For us the job is the same: you send us the unit, we remanufacture it and it leaves with the same warranty as a current model.

It is one of the most frequent causes in cars that have been standing for a long time. Moisture gets in through the connector or condenses inside the block and ends up seizing the pump motor or corroding its tracks, which the system logs as codes 51 to 53 (ABS pump motor seized or faulty). It is not usually a motor burnt out through use, but a seizure caused by oxidation, and in most cases it can be recovered by dismantling and remanufacturing the hydraulic unit instead of replacing the complete unit.
