WHY DOES IT FAIL?

Symptoms of a faulty ABS on the K Series

These are the warnings we hear about most from owners of the K 1200 LT, K 1200 RS, K 1200 S, K 1300 and K 1600. On a loaded LT, the margin between the first warning and losing the assistance altogether is just a few kilometres.

The self-test doesn’t start when you switch on the ignition

The warning light comes on and stays there, never flashing or going out when you ride off. The unit isn’t responding to the ECU: it’s the module, not a sensor.

ABS warning light flashing while riding

The self-test does start but stops halfway. On the K 1300 and the K 1600 it is usually the wheel sensor or the reluctor ring, which is much cheaper to rule out before removing anything.

Rock-hard lever and pedal on the K 1200 LT

When the servo stops helping, you are braking 380 kg with nothing but the direct strength of your hand. You notice it at the first traffic light and it is the warning we see most often in the workshop.

The pump doesn’t prime and the lever goes right back to the grip

The travel gets longer and the braking only reaches half pressure. It is the other extreme of the same Integral ABS fault: the unit can no longer maintain the accumulator.

Continuous pump hum when stationary

With the ignition on and the motorcycle stationary, the pump keeps trying to build up pressure and fails. If you keep riding like that, the motor ends up failing completely.

You only lose assistance on the rear brake

Typical of the K 1200 S and the K 1200 R, with partial Integral ABS: the pedal circuit is the first to go and you notice it when braking on a descent with the motorcycle loaded.

ABS and brake warning lights on at the same time

The classic combination on the power-assisted unit. Before removing anything it is worth ruling out a low battery and the fluid level, which on the LT produce exactly the same picture.

The ABS cuts out when going over a speed bump

A dirty reluctor ring or a sensor with play sends an impossible signal and the system switches itself off until you switch the ignition on again.

One model, four different modules

BMW changed the K Series ABS midway through production without changing the name of the motorcycle. That is why two K 1200 RS or two K 1600 GT can have different modules: look at the model and year of your motorcycle to know which one to choose.

  • 1993 – 2000 approx.

    1st Generation Module

The ABS of the first K models on this list. Anti-lock only: it doesn’t generate pressure, so if it fails the motorcycle still brakes like one without ABS.

    ModelsK 1100 LT, and the first-series K 1200 RS and K 1200 LT, built up to 2000–2001.

    View module details
  • 2000 – 2007 approx. World leaders in repairing this unit

    Integral FTE I module

The power-assisted Integral ABS: a pump inside the unit generates the braking pressure and distributes it between the two brakes. On motorcycles weighing more than 350 kg such as the LT or the GT it works on every braking manoeuvre, not just emergency ones, and that is why it is the weak point of the series.

    ModelsK 1200 RS from 02/2000, K 1200 LT from 02/2001, first-series K 1200 GT, and the K 1200 S and K 1200 R built up to 07/2006.

    View module details
  • 2007 – 2013 approx.

    Integral II module

The second generation of the Integral ABS, more compact and without brake servo. On the outside the motorcycle hardly changed, so the year is what gives it away.

    ModelsSecond-series K 1200 GT, K 1200 S and K 1200 R from 08/2006, K 1200 R Sport, K 1300 S, R and GT, and the first-series K 1600 GT and GTL (2011–2013).

    View module details
  • 2013 – present

    BMW K Series ABS module

With the update of the K 1600, BMW opted to use more generic ABS modules and put its R&D into programming their functions: it is the software that governs the braking and incorporates ABS Pro, which adjusts the pressure according to the motorcycle’s lean angle.

    ModelsK 1600 GT and GTL from 2014, K 1600 GTL Exclusive, K 1600 B and K 1600 Grand America.

How to tell which one is yours: find your motorcycle in the list of models above; each card shows the dates and the module it has. The date that counts is the date of manufacture, which appears on the registration document and on the chassis plate, not the date of first registration. If your motorcycle falls right on the changeover, send us the module’s part number and we’ll tell you which one it is.

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.

Well, 3 months ago they repaired a Seat León module for me, and from the very first moment they treated me in a super professional way. They were quick with the repair and practical with collecting the part and delivering it. No problems so far, I recommend them one hundred per cent.

Frequently asked questions about the K Series ABS

Permanently on from the ignition without ever flashing means the self-test hasn’t started: the unit isn’t answering. That points to the module. If instead it flashes for a few seconds and goes out once you pass about 5 km/h, the self-test does complete and whatever is failing lies outside the unit. And if it flashes and then stays on, the self-test starts and stops halfway, which is the pattern of the wheel sensor, its wiring or a dirty reluctor ring. You can see the difference within three seconds of switching on the ignition, and it saves removing a unit that has nothing wrong with it.

Because on these two the linking is total: the unit’s electric pump generates the pressure for both brakes every time you touch the lever or the pedal, not only when something slips. Add the weight of an LT in running order and you get far more pump cycles per kilometre than on any other BMW of the period. The points we most often find failed when we open them are the pump motor, the pressure sensors and the board, with worn tracks and capacitors. From fifteen years or 60,000 km onwards it comes into the workshop very often, and in units that have spent winters laid up the proportion rises.

Yes, and on the faired K models it is one of the cases we see most often. The jet gets in under the fairing and reaches the module connector or the front sensor connector, which are right in its path. At first it causes intermittent faults that disappear when it dries; over time the water oxidises the contacts and the fault becomes permanent. If it is caught in time, the connector is cleaned and it recovers; if it has been going on for months, the corrosion has already got into the board and the affected tracks have to be rebuilt. We do both.

One winter without use is enough for the valves in the hydraulic unit to stick and for the brake fluid, if it is past its date, to have absorbed moisture and started attacking the inside. It is also when voltage faults appear: a weak battery can’t deliver what the unit demands on start-up, a power supply code is logged and the system switches itself off. Before writing anything off, fully charge the battery, change the fluid and read the codes: on the K 1300 that is more than once where it ends.

On the K 1200 LT, the K 1200 RS from 2001 onwards and the first K 1200 GT, yes: conventional bleeding doesn’t reach the unit’s internal circuit and the bleeding cycle has to be triggered from the diagnostic tool so that the pump moves the fluid through the inside. If this is skipped, air remains trapped and the lever stays spongy however much it is bled at the callipers. On the K 1300 and the K 1600, which no longer have a servo, normal bleeding is enough. We’ll tell you in the report according to the unit you have sent us.

The repair costs around a quarter of the price of a new unit, and on the LT the Integral ABS assembly is one of the most expensive spare parts on the motorcycle. What’s more, we repair your own unit, so it comes back with its coding and doesn’t need to be paired with the motorcycle again.

Yes. We cover all four generations of the series: the ABS I of the K 100, K 75 and K 1, the ABS II of the K 1100 and the first K 1200, the power-assisted Integral ABS of the K 1200 LT, RS and GT, and the servo-less system of the K 1300 and K 1600, with ABS Pro on the latest ones. Each one goes on a different bench, because validating a power-assisted unit is nothing like validating one that only modulates pressure. The repair comes with a one-year warranty.
