WHY DOES IT FAIL?
Symptoms of a faulty ABS on the K Series
These are the warnings we hear about most from owners of the K 1200 LT, K 1200 RS, K 1200 S, K 1300 and K 1600. On a loaded LT, the margin between the first warning and losing the assistance altogether is just a few kilometres.
The self-test doesn’t start when you switch on the ignition
The warning light comes on and stays there, never flashing or going out when you ride off. The unit isn’t responding to the ECU: it’s the module, not a sensor.
ABS warning light flashing while riding
The self-test does start but stops halfway. On the K 1300 and the K 1600 it is usually the wheel sensor or the reluctor ring, which is much cheaper to rule out before removing anything.
Rock-hard lever and pedal on the K 1200 LT
When the servo stops helping, you are braking 380 kg with nothing but the direct strength of your hand. You notice it at the first traffic light and it is the warning we see most often in the workshop.
The pump doesn’t prime and the lever goes right back to the grip
The travel gets longer and the braking only reaches half pressure. It is the other extreme of the same Integral ABS fault: the unit can no longer maintain the accumulator.
Continuous pump hum when stationary
With the ignition on and the motorcycle stationary, the pump keeps trying to build up pressure and fails. If you keep riding like that, the motor ends up failing completely.
You only lose assistance on the rear brake
Typical of the K 1200 S and the K 1200 R, with partial Integral ABS: the pedal circuit is the first to go and you notice it when braking on a descent with the motorcycle loaded.
ABS and brake warning lights on at the same time
The classic combination on the power-assisted unit. Before removing anything it is worth ruling out a low battery and the fluid level, which on the LT produce exactly the same picture.
The ABS cuts out when going over a speed bump
A dirty reluctor ring or a sensor with play sends an impossible signal and the system switches itself off until you switch the ignition on again.
One model, four different modules
BMW changed the K Series ABS midway through production without changing the name of the motorcycle. That is why two K 1200 RS or two K 1600 GT can have different modules: look at the model and year of your motorcycle to know which one to choose.
-
1993 – 2000 approx. 1st Generation Module
The ABS of the first K models on this list. Anti-lock only: it doesn’t generate pressure, so if it fails the motorcycle still brakes like one without ABS.

-
2000 – 2007 approx. World leaders in repairing this unit Integral FTE I module
The power-assisted Integral ABS: a pump inside the unit generates the braking pressure and distributes it between the two brakes. On motorcycles weighing more than 350 kg such as the LT or the GT it works on every braking manoeuvre, not just emergency ones, and that is why it is the weak point of the series.
View module detailsModelsK 1200 RS from 02/2000, K 1200 LT from 02/2001, first-series K 1200 GT, and the K 1200 S and K 1200 R built up to 07/2006.
-
2007 – 2013 approx. Integral II module
The second generation of the Integral ABS, more compact and without brake servo. On the outside the motorcycle hardly changed, so the year is what gives it away.

2013 – present BMW K Series ABS module
With the update of the K 1600, BMW opted to use more generic ABS modules and put its R&D into programming their functions: it is the software that governs the braking and incorporates ABS Pro, which adjusts the pressure according to the motorcycle’s lean angle.

How to tell which one is yours: find your motorcycle in the list of models above; each card shows the dates and the module it has. The date that counts is the date of manufacture, which appears on the registration document and on the chassis plate, not the date of first registration. If your motorcycle falls right on the changeover, send us the module’s part number and we’ll tell you which one it is.
