ABS MODULE FOR THE C SERIES

C Series models compatible with this repair

Each card shows the braking system fitted to that variant. The C 650 GT appears twice because in 2016 it changed unit when traction control was added, and so do the C 400 X and C 400 GT, because from 2025 they have ABS Pro with cornering braking.

We can't find that model. Write to us with the module's part number and we'll tell you if we can repair it.

WHY DOES IT FAIL?

Symptoms of a faulty ABS on the C Series

These are the warnings we hear about most from owners of the C 600 Sport, C 650 GT and C 650 Sport. None of them leaves you without brakes: here the module does not build pressure, so what you lose is anti-lock braking, and you lose it on exactly the vehicle most often ridden in the wet.

ABS warning light solid from the moment you switch on the ignition

It comes on and stays there, without ever flashing or going out when you pull away. The self-test has not even started: the unit is not responding.

It flashes and stays on as you pull away

The self-test starts and cuts out halfway. On these scooters the front sensor sits behind a 15-inch wheel that picks up all the dirt in the city, so start there before touching the module.

The rear wheel locks with the left-hand lever

Here the rear brake is the left-hand lever, and it is the one used most in town. Without anti-lock it locks straight away on a manhole cover or on wet road paint, and you notice it before any warning light.

On the C evolution the engine braking changes too

The same module controls energy regeneration. When it fails, you do not just lose anti-lock braking: the engine braking when you roll off the throttle stops behaving as it always has and the scooter runs on further than you expect.

Pump humming with the ignition on

A short click when you switch on the ignition is the self-test and is normal. A hum that does not stop with the scooter stationary is not: the pump motor keeps trying and eventually gives out.

It only fails on rainy days

The fault comes and goes with the humidity and disappears as soon as the sun comes out. It is the connector starting to build up verdigris, and it is the stage at which it can still be fixed by cleaning rather than rebuilding.

It stopped working after pressure washing

A scooter gets washed more than any other bike, and the jet finds the module connector under the bodywork. At first it throws faults that clear once it dries; then the water corrodes the contacts and the warning light no longer goes out.

It trips over a speed bump on the way out of the garage

A dirty reluctor ring or a loose sensor sends an impossible signal over the bump and the system switches itself off until you switch the ignition on again. In town it happens every day at the same spot.

A single ABS module for the whole C Series

Every ABS fitted to the C Series, from the C1 to today’s C 400 models, petrol or electric, is repaired the same way.

  • 1999 – present

    BMW C Series ABS Module

On the C Series, BMW did not develop its own ABS for its scooters: it fitted the Bosch ABS modules available at the time each one was built. The C1 offered it as an option, with the most basic functions; the C 600 Sport and C 650 had it as standard, with a two-channel Bosch 9M that regulates the front and rear brakes separately; the C evolution uses that same unit with software that splits the braking between the discs and the electric motor’s energy regeneration; and the C 400 X and C 400 GT have gradually added traction control and, from 2025, ABS Pro with cornering braking.

Why a single moduleFrom one generation to the next the part number and the functions change, but the repair process is the same for all of them. That is why we group them into a single BMW C Series ABS Module, with the same price and the same turnaround whatever the year of your scooter.

    ModelsC1 125 and C1 200, C 600 Sport, C 650 GT and C 650 Sport, C evolution, and first- and second-series C 400 X and C 400 GT.

What fails insideWhat urban use punishes: short journeys, constant humidity and the hose. The corroded connector, which is where the water gets in and where almost everything starts; the tracks and capacitors on the circuit board after ten or twelve years of humidity; the valves in the hydraulic unit seized after a winter outdoors; and the pump motor when the bike has been ridden on with the warning showing.

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.

Well, 3 months ago they repaired a Seat León module for me, and from the very first moment they treated me in a super professional way. They were quick with the repair and practical with collecting the part and delivering it. No problems so far, I recommend them one hundred per cent.

Frequently asked questions about C Series ABS

Solid from ignition-on without ever flashing means the self-test has not started: the unit is not responding. That points to the module. If it flashes for a few seconds and goes out as soon as you move off, the self-test has completed and there is no fault to look for. And if it flashes and then stays on, it has started and cut out halfway, which is the pattern of the wheel sensor, its wiring or a dirty reluctor ring. On an urban scooter that third option is the most common of the three, so it is worth checking before you take anything apart.

Precisely because of how it is used. A city scooter does short journeys, never fully dries out between them, sleeps outdoors or in a damp garage and gets hosed down every five minutes. That does not punish the engine, but it does punish the electronics: the connector takes on moisture, the water creeps up the loom and the tracks and capacitors on the circuit board end up paying for it. The units we open most often are around ten or twelve years old and stand out not for their mileage, but for winters spent outdoors. On a 2012 C 600 Sport or a C 650 GT from the same batch it is already a common fault.

Quite a lot. The C evolution uses the same two-channel Bosch 9M ABS as the petrol maxi-scooters, but with software adapted to also control energy regeneration: the module needs to know what each brake is doing in order to split the work between motor braking and mechanical braking. That is why, when the unit fails, it is not just the warning light that stays on: the engine braking when you roll off the throttle feels different. It is the symptom that sets this one apart from any other scooter in the range, and it is worth telling us when you send it, because the test bench is not the same.

Yes, and on these scooters it is one of the cases we see most often, because the bodywork covers the module and gives a false sense that it is protected: the jet gets in from underneath and reaches the connector all the same. For the first few weeks the fault appears and disappears depending on the humidity that day; then verdigris settles, the contact loses cross-section and the warning light no longer goes out. If it reaches us early, the connector is cleaned and it recovers; if it has been months, the moisture has crept up the loom to the circuit board and the affected tracks have to be rebuilt. Both are included in the repair.

Most commonly, the valves in the hydraulic unit have stuck and the brake fluid, if it is out of date, has absorbed moisture and started attacking the inside. And there is a second suspect that costs nothing to rule out: the battery. A weak battery after months off the road cannot give the unit what it asks for when the ignition is switched on, a voltage code is logged and the system switches itself off. Before writing anything off, give it a full charge, change the fluid and read the codes.

The repair costs around a quarter of the price of a new unit, and on a ten-year-old scooter that difference often decides between fixing it and leaving it parked. And because we repair yours, it comes back with its coding and there is no need to pair it with the vehicle again or take it to a dealer to adapt it.

Yes. We cover the three stages of the series: the optional unit on the 2000 to 2002 C1, which is from another era and is validated on the bench because it cannot be read through a plug like modern ones; the two-channel Bosch 9M on the C 600 Sport, C 650 Sport, C 650 GT and C evolution; and the units on the C 400 X and C 400 GT, with ABS Pro on 2025 models onwards. Each group goes on a different bench. The repair comes with a one-year warranty.
