WHY DOES IT FAIL?
Subaru ABS fault symptoms
Spotting a Subaru ABS fault in time can prevent accidents and bigger repairs. The Subaru ABS warning light on in the instrument cluster is the warning we hear about most at the workshop, but it rarely comes alone: a wheel sensor that stops sending a signal, a solenoid valve that does not release pressure or interrupted communication with the VDC can show up in several ways. The most common signs of a faulty ABS on a Subaru are:
ABS warning light on
The Subaru ABS warning light stays on in the instrument cluster, often accompanied by the VDC warning or cruise control cancellation (code 43). On Subarus that pre-date the OBD-II format, the fault is read as a two-digit numerical code (21, 23, 25 or 27, depending on the wheel) and on more recent ones as C0101 / C0102 or C0106.
Interrupted communication with the VDC
The scanner logs code C0057, an interruption in the VDC system affecting communication between the ECM and the brake control module: although the warning names the VDC, the source may be the ABS control unit itself.
Unpredictable braking
The braking system does not respond as it should. DTC reading and testing of every hydraulic and electronic channel.
Solenoid valve fault
The diagnostic tool logs code 29 or one in the 31 – 38 range and your Subaru’s hydraulic block stops applying or releasing pressure wheel by wheel, an internal module fault that is not fixed by replacing external sensors.
