WHY DOES IT FAIL?

Symptoms of a faulty ABS on the R Series

These are the warnings we hear about most from owners of the R 1100, R 1150, R 1200 and R 1250. The sooner it is identified, the less damage is done to the hydraulic unit.

ABS warning light permanently on from the moment you switch on the ignition

It never gets as far as the self-test: it stays on without flashing and the system never arms. This points to the unit, not a sensor.

ABS warning light flashing after starting

The self-test starts but doesn’t complete. This is typical of a wheel sensor or its wiring, which is much cheaper to rule out before touching the module.

The pump doesn’t prime and the lever goes right back to the grip

Typical of the power-assisted Integral ABS: when the assistance is lost, the lever travel gets longer and the braking power is halved.

Suddenly hard braking on the R 1150 and R 1200

The lever and pedal go rock-hard because the servo has stopped helping. You are braking with nothing but the strength of your hand.

Continuous pump hum with the ignition on

The unit is trying to build up pressure and failing. If it is left like that, the pump motor ends up failing completely.

Loss of assistance on the rear brake only

On variants with partial Integral ABS the rear circuit is the first to go, and you notice it when braking with the pedal on a descent.

ABS and brake warning lights on at the same time

The classic combination on the power-assisted unit. Before removing anything it is worth ruling out a low battery and the fluid level, which produce the same picture.

The ABS cuts out on its own when going over a speed bump

A dirty reluctor ring or a sensor with play sends an impossible signal and the system switches itself off until the next time the ignition is switched on.

One model, four different modules

BMW changed the R Series ABS midway through production without changing the name of the motorcycle. That is why two R 1150 GS or two R 1200 GS can have different modules: look at the model and year of your motorcycle to know which one to choose.

  • 1993 – 2001 approx.

    1st Generation Module

The ABS of the first four-valve boxers. Anti-lock only: it doesn’t generate pressure, so if it fails the motorcycle still brakes like one without ABS.

    ModelsR 1100 RS, GS, R, RT and S, R 850 R (first series), R 850 C, the first R 1200 C and R 1200 C Independent, and the R 1150 GS and GS Adventure built up to 2001–2002.

    View module details
  • 2001 – 2006 approx. World leaders in repairing this unit

    Integral FTE I module

The power-assisted Integral ABS: a pump inside the unit generates the braking pressure and distributes it between the two brakes. It works on every braking manoeuvre, not just emergency ones, and that is why it is the weak point of the series.

    ModelsR 1150 R, Rockster, RS and RT, R 1200 CL and ST, R 850 R (second series), R 1100 S from 02/2001, and the R 1150 GS, R 1200 GS, GS Adventure and RT built before the 2006 change.

    View module details
  • 2006 – 2013 approx.

    Integral II module

The second generation of the Integral ABS, more compact and without brake servo. On the outside the motorcycle hardly changed, so the year is what gives it away.

    ModelsR 1200 GS from 11/2006, R 1200 GS Adventure from 09/2006, R 1200 RT from 10/2006, R 1200 R and R 1200 S.

    View module details
  • 2013 – present

    BMW R Series ABS module

With the arrival of the water-cooled engines (Liquid Cooled, LC), BMW opted to use more generic ABS modules and put its R&D into programming their functions: it is the software that governs the braking and incorporates ABS Pro, which adjusts the pressure according to the motorcycle’s lean angle.

ModelsR 1200 GS, GS Adventure, RT, R and RS LC, R nineT, R 1250 GS, GS Adventure, RT, R and RS, R 18 and R 1300 GS.

How to tell which one is yours: find your motorcycle in the list of models above; each card shows the dates and the module it has. The date that counts is the date of manufacture, which appears on the registration document and on the chassis plate, not the date of first registration. If your motorcycle falls right on the changeover, send us the module’s part number and we’ll tell you which one it is.

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.

Well, 3 months ago they repaired a Seat León module for me, and from the very first moment they treated me in a super professional way. They were quick with the repair and practical with collecting the part and delivering it. No problems so far, I recommend them one hundred per cent.

Frequently asked questions about the R Series ABS

Permanently on from the ignition without ever flashing means the self-test hasn’t even started: the unit isn’t responding. That points to the module. If instead it flashes for a few seconds and then stays on, the self-test does start and stops halfway, which is the pattern of a wheel sensor, its wiring or a dirty reluctor ring. You can see the difference within three seconds of switching on the ignition, and it saves removing a unit that has nothing wrong with it.

Because it isn’t just an anti-lock system: the unit itself generates the braking pressure with an electric pump and distributes it between the two circuits. That means it works every time you brake, not only when a wheel slips. The points we most often find failed when we open them are the pump motor, the pressure sensors and the board, with tracks and capacitors punished by years of thermal cycles. From fifteen years and 60,000 km onwards it comes into the workshop very often, and in units that have spent winters laid up the proportion rises.

Yes, and it is one of the cases we see most often. The pressure jet gets in through the module connector or the wheel sensor connector and leaves moisture where it shouldn’t be. At first it causes intermittent faults that disappear when it dries; over time the water oxidises the contacts and the fault becomes permanent. If it is caught in time the connector is cleaned and it recovers; if it has been going on for months, the corrosion has already got into the board and the affected tracks have to be rebuilt. We do both.

On the Integral ABS, one winter without use is enough for the valves in the hydraulic unit to stick and for the brake fluid, if it is past its date, to have absorbed moisture and started attacking the inside. It is also when voltage faults appear: a weak battery can’t deliver what the pump demands on start-up, the module logs a power supply code and switches itself off. Before writing anything off, it is worth fully charging the battery and reading the codes.

On variants with Integral ABS, yes: conventional bleeding doesn’t reach the unit’s internal circuit, and the bleeding cycle has to be triggered from the diagnostic tool so that the pump moves the fluid through the inside. If this is skipped, air remains trapped and the lever stays spongy however much it is bled at the callipers. On the variants without servo, from 2007 onwards, normal bleeding is enough. We’ll tell you in the report according to the unit you have sent us.

The repair costs around a quarter of the price of a new unit, which on the power-assisted R 1200 GS is one of the most expensive spare parts on the motorcycle. What’s more, we repair your own unit, so it comes back with its coding and doesn’t need to be paired with the motorcycle.

Yes. We cover all three generations of the series: the ABS II of the R 850 and R 1100, the Integral ABS of the R 1150 and the first R 1200, and the ABS Pro of the R 1200 LC, R 1250 and R 1300. Each one goes on a different bench, because validating a power-assisted unit is nothing like validating one that only modulates pressure. The repair comes with a one-year warranty.

You can enable or disable these cookies by ticking the corresponding box; they are disabled by default.
