What is the Toyota and Lexus ECB system?
ECB is the brake system on Toyota hybrids and several Lexus models. Unlike a conventional car, the pedal doesn’t push the brake fluid directly: sensors measure how you press it and a control unit splits the braking between the electric motor, which uses it to recharge the battery, and the brakes on each wheel. The pressure is generated by an electric pump and stored by an accumulator, which is why your car brakes just as well even when the petrol engine is off.
Over the years, the accumulator and valves can start losing pressure internally and the car warns you. There is no need to replace the whole system with a new one: at our technical repair centre we fully remanufacture your own ECB and return it tested and ready to fit.
This is how your car warns you that the ECB is failing
If you recognise any of these symptoms, your ECB most likely needs checking:
The brake pump won’t stop running
- It starts up every few seconds, even with the car stationary.
- It is the earliest warning sign. Running for a moment when you open the door is normal.
Several warning lights come on at once
- Brake, ABS and traction control, or the «Check VSC» warning.
- Sometimes with a beep and the exclamation-mark triangle.
The pedal feels hard or long
- The car brakes, but you have to press harder or the pedal sinks further than normal.
- It is a safety fault: it should be checked as soon as possible.
Braking assistance is lost
- After several brake applications, the brake loses its assistance and the stability control switches off.
- Sometimes you hear a noise from the pump just before.
Before sending it, rule these out
Some faults light up the same warning lights and aren’t in the ECB. Ask your workshop to check them before removing it and you’ll save yourself a shipment:
- 12 V auxiliary battery: if it is weak, it can trigger brake warnings.
- Pump relays and fuses: they are in the car, not in the ECB.
- Brake fluid level: if it is low, it also lights up the warning light.
- A pending calibration: after changing pads or working on the circuit, the system needs adjusting with the diagnostic tool.
What do you need to send us?
Depending on your car’s generation, the ECB is made up of one, two or three units. Send us all the ones in your system: we always remanufacture them together and the warranty covers the complete assembly. If only one is fixed, the fault normally comes back.
Why trust Nito Motor?
The whole assembly
We remanufacture all the units in your system, not just the one showing the fault. That way the fault doesn’t come back because of a part that wasn’t checked.
Your own unit
It keeps its serial number and programming, so nothing needs to be coded. And without the risk of fitting a used part from another version.
Written warranty
1 year on the complete assembly, with no mileage limit, extendable to 2 years when you place your order.
You pay at the end
You only pay once your ECB has been repaired. No upfront payment and a fixed price.
Every unit checked
We mark every part with its own QR code and test it before returning it.
Always a solution
If your ECB can’t be fixed the standard way, we’ll offer you an alternative or return it to you free of charge.
The Lexus ECB variant
Lexus is the Toyota group’s premium range, and its ECB units have internal components and functions that Toyota’s don’t. Repairing them is more complex, which is why they have their own price.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my car has ECB?
It is fitted to the Toyota Prius and most Toyota and Lexus hybrids, as well as some petrol Lexus models; you’ll find the list in the Compatible vehicles tab. Note: the same model in a petrol or diesel version usually has a conventional ABS. If in doubt, write to us with the model and year and we’ll confirm it.
The brake pump on my Prius runs every few seconds. What’s wrong with it?
Most commonly, the accumulator is losing pressure internally and the pump keeps recharging it. You won’t see any fluid on the ground. It usually comes with the brake, ABS and traction control warning lights on. Have it checked soon: it’s the brake system.
My car has two parts, the brake booster and the pump. Which one should I send you?
Both. We always remanufacture the whole assembly, and the warranty covers all of it.
Does anything need to be coded when it is fitted?
No, because it is your own unit, with its serial number and programming. That said, after fitting your workshop must bleed the circuit with a Toyota-compatible diagnostic tool.
Can I keep driving with the warning lights on?
The car still brakes, but without assistance: the pedal feels harder and you need more distance to stop. Only use it when absolutely necessary, with care, and take it to the workshop as soon as possible.
Can I remove the unit myself?
It’s better to have a workshop do it. The system holds pressure even with the car switched off, and before disconnecting any pipe it must be released following the manufacturer’s procedure.
How long does the repair take?
Between 24 and 48 hours from when we receive your ECB at our technical repair centre. You only pay once it has been repaired.
And what if my ECB can’t be repaired?
If we can’t repair it and don’t offer you a solution, we don’t charge you anything: we return your part to you at no cost whatsoever.
Why does the Lexus ECB have a different price?
Because it is a variant in its own right: as premium models, their units have different internal components and functions and repairing them is more complex. Choose Lexus in the product options and you’ll see its price.
Does the repair include a warranty?
Yes. The repair comes with a 12-month certified warranty on the complete assembly, with no mileage limit, and you can extend it to 24 months when you place your order.
Important:
- Nito Motor S.L. will only be liable for the correct operation of the module during that period.
- Nito Motor S.L. will not be liable for the cost of fitting and removing the module during the warranty period; this cost will be borne by the workshop or the end customer.
- The warranty will be void if there are clear signs that the module contains any fluid other than brake fluid (water, cleaning solvent…). We recommend never cleaning the module with a pressure washer.
Fault codes for the Toyota and Lexus ECB
If your workshop has connected the car to the diagnostic tool and any of these codes appears, the fault is very likely in the ECB. The first four, C1391, C1256, C1252 and C1253, are the ones we see most:
Accumulator leak: loses pressure at rest faster than permitted. Almost always an internal leak
Low accumulator pressure: accumulator, pressure sensor or pump motor
The pump runs for too long continuously: it is compensating for a leak or not charging
Pump motor relays: check the relays and wiring loom first, then the unit
Hydraulic control fault; usually appears together with C1391
Accumulator pressure sensor out of range
Master cylinder pressure sensors
Wheel pressure sensors
Master cylinder cut-off valves (SMC1 / SMC2)
Pedal stroke simulator valve (SCSS)
Linear pressure-increase valves, one per wheel
Linear pressure-reduction valves, one per wheel
Linear valve learning doesn't complete
Pressure loss in a wheel circuit: unit, leak or after changing pads
Brake control unit fault… or low voltage from the 12 V battery

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.
