What is the Mercedes SBC system?
SBC (Sensotronic Brake Control) is the electro-hydraulic brake that Mercedes-Benz developed with Bosch. In a Mercedes with SBC, the pedal doesn’t push the fluid to the calipers: it is a sensor. What really does the braking is an electric pump that keeps an accumulator charged at 140-160 bar, and eight solenoid valves that distribute that pressure wheel by wheel. The same SBC module also manages the ABS, ESP, BAS and ASR.
It is fitted as standard to the E-Class W211 saloon and the S211 estate up to mid-2006, the pre-facelift CLS C219, the SL R230 throughout its production and the SLR McLaren. You’ll find the full list in the Compatible vehicles tab.
Our Mercedes SBC repair is a remanufacture: at our technical repair centre we return the complete unit to service condition, working on your own unit and keeping its coding, so it doesn’t need to be reprogrammed when it is fitted.
Is your Mercedes showing «Brake maintenance, visit workshop»?
That message, «Reduced braking power» or «SBC Visit workshop!» are the typical warnings of an SBC fault on the Mercedes W211, the CLS or the SL. Behind them there may be something as simple as the unit’s internal counters reaching their limit, or something as serious as the system having dropped into emergency mode. The colour of the warning tells you where you stand:
White or grey warning: «Service brake Visit workshop!»
- The service-life counters have run out (code C249F). The car still brakes well.
- It is the best time to repair it: there is no damage to other parts yet.
Yellow warning: «Brake maintenance» or «Reduced braking power»
- There is already real wear in the accumulator or the pump (C2498, C2131).
- Only make short journeys and take it to the workshop: it can get worse almost without warning.
Red warning with a beep: «Brake malfunction! Stop the vehicle»
- The SBC has dropped into emergency mode: only the front wheels brake, with no brake servo, ABS or ESP.
- Don’t drive. Call a tow truck.
The pump starts up more often than before
- It is the earliest sign: the accumulator has lost its pre-charge and the pump works twice as hard to compensate.
- Dealing with it in time stops the pump motor wearing out as a result.
Price to repair the SBC: €500 + VAT, all codes included
We don’t repair individual codes: we remanufacture the complete unit. That’s why the price is the same whether it arrives with a C249F counter code or with several valve, pump and electronics codes.
Single price
€500+ VAT
€605 including VAT
- No prior quote needed
- No surcharges
- All fault codes
What the price always includes
- Full diagnosis and reading of all counters
- Pump motor: all wear parts new
- Pressure accumulator recharged to its working pressure
- Individual test of all eight solenoid valves
- Inspection and repair of the circuit board
- Final test of the unit and counters reset to zero
The SBC doesn’t have one counter: it has several
The SBC unit has several internal counters: brake applications, pump motor revolutions and hours of use. None of them depends on mileage and none is cleared by disconnecting the battery. When the combination reaches the design limit, C249F is triggered and the instrument cluster asks you to visit the workshop, even if the car brakes perfectly.
That’s why a thirty-euro reset doesn’t last: it resets one counter and the others keep counting, so the warning comes back. And no reset repairs the wear on the pump motor, the accumulator’s lost pre-charge or the valve seats. We reset all the counters, but only as the last step of the remanufacture, when the unit really is as good as new.
A test you can do yourself: if the warning comes back straight after a reset, your fault isn’t a counter fault. Physical fault codes, such as C2131 for the accumulator, C25D4 for lack of pressure or C226F for the electronics, don’t go away with a reset.
Benefits of repairing your SBC module
No reprogramming and no trip to the dealer
We remanufacture your own unit and it keeps its coding. A second-hand SBC unit whose part number or software doesn’t match the car throws C24DB and doesn’t work.
Complete remanufacture, not a patch-up
Pump, accumulator, solenoid valves and electronics. The wear parts are always replaced, not just the one that has failed.
1-year warranty, extendable to 2
In writing and with no mileage limit, extendable to 24 months when you place your order.
Brakes, ABS and ESP working again
A brake or ABS warning that is on is grounds for failing the roadworthiness test (ITV). With the SBC repaired, your Mercedes is safe and legal again.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to repair the SBC on my Mercedes?
€500 + VAT (€605 including VAT), a single price no matter how many fault codes the unit has. It is the same price for the SBC of the Mercedes W211, the CLS C219 and the SL R230.
Does my Mercedes have SBC?
It is fitted to the E-Class W211 and S211 up to the mid-2006 facelift, the pre-facelift CLS C219, the SL R230 throughout its production and the SLR McLaren. The quick check is on the instrument cluster: if «SBC H» appears when you brake at a standstill, it’s SBC; if «HOLD» appears, it’s Adaptive Brake, the conventional brake Mercedes fitted from 2007. The S-Class W220 and the CL C215 don’t have SBC.
Can I keep driving with the SBC warning on?
It depends on the colour. If it is white or grey, yes, while you book an appointment at the workshop. If it is yellow, only short journeys. If it is red and a beep sounds, no: the system has dropped into emergency mode, only the front wheels brake and there is no brake servo. Call a tow truck.
Is there any point in resetting the SBC counter?
Only as the last step of a real repair. The SBC has several counters, and a tool that resets one of them leaves the others counting, so the warning comes back. What’s more, no reset repairs the wear on the pump motor, the accumulator’s lost pre-charge or the valves.
How is a Mercedes SBC repaired?
We read the codes and counters, open the pump motor and replace all its wear parts, recharge the pressure accumulator, test all eight solenoid valves one by one, inspect and repair the circuit board and test the complete unit. Finally, we reset all the counters to zero.
Does a W211 SBC repair kit work?
A Mercedes W211 SBC repair kit, such as an accumulator or a set of loose brushes, fixes a single part. If the rest of the unit has the same wear, the warning comes back. That’s why we remanufacture the complete SBC module.
Does the unit need to be reprogrammed when it is fitted?
No. We remanufacture your own unit and it keeps the vehicle’s coding. It is one of the reasons not to buy a second-hand one: if the part number or software doesn’t match the car, it throws C24DB and doesn’t work.
How long does the repair take?
Repairing the SBC takes us 24/48 hours (working days) from when the unit arrives at our technical repair centre. You only pay once it has been repaired.
Can I remove the unit myself?
Not without first deactivating the SBC with a diagnostic tool (STAR Diagnosis, XENTRY or equivalent). The accumulator is charged to 140-160 bar: removing the unit without deactivating the system is dangerous and a common way of damaging it. After fitting, the circuit must be bled using the Mercedes procedure.
Does Mercedes cover this repair?
In the United States, Mercedes-Benz extended SBC coverage in 2018 to 25 years with no mileage limit. In Spain and the rest of Europe there is no record of an equivalent published campaign. If your car is a US import, it is worth having an official dealer check your chassis number before you spend anything.
What happens if the unit can’t be repaired?
If we can’t repair it and don’t offer you a solution, we don’t charge you anything: we return your part to you at no cost whatsoever.
Does the repair include a warranty?
Yes. The repair comes with a 12-month certified warranty, with no mileage limit, and you can extend it to 24 months when you place your order.
Important:
- Nito Motor S.L. will only be liable for the correct operation of the module during that period.
- Nito Motor S.L. will not be liable for the cost of fitting and removing the module during the warranty period; this cost will be borne by the workshop or the end customer.
- The warranty will be void if there are clear signs that the module contains any fluid other than brake fluid (water, cleaning solvent…). We recommend never cleaning the module with a pressure washer.
Mercedes SBC fault codes
Of all the codes an SBC can throw, only one, C249F, relates to the counters. All the others describe something that is physically failing inside the unit, and none of them is fixed with a reset. We repair them all, at the same price. These are the ones we see most when we connect the car to a diagnostic tool:
A7/3 unit service-life counters exhausted. Not yet a physical fault
High-pressure reserve exhausted: accumulator no longer holding and pump worn
Faulty pressure accumulator: it has lost its gas pre-charge
Accumulator pre-charge too low
The accumulator doesn't hold pressure
Wear limit in pressure regulation: pump cycles out of range
Pump motor relay with pitted contacts
Internal solenoid valve fault: degraded coil or solenoid
Pump motor fault or wear: brushes, commutator or bearing
No pressure or insufficient pressure: the pump isn't charging, internal leak or air in the system
Pressure can't be increased: pump, valve or leak
A7/3y6 inlet valve fault: valve stuck or coil open
Fault increasing pressure in a front circuit
Fault increasing rear left pressure
Fault increasing rear right pressure
Internal error in the A7/3n1 control unit: solder joints, power component or moisture
Valve relay power supply fault
Power supply or internal fault: ground, connector or relay
CAN communication fault: the unit's part number or software doesn't match the car
C24DB deserves a separate warning: there is no universal SBC unit for the W211. There are dozens of variants depending on year, engine and software version, and a unit that doesn't match the car's part number throws that code and doesn't work. It is one of the reasons to repair yours rather than buy a second-hand one.

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.
