WHY DOES IT FAIL?

Symptoms of an Iveco ABS fault

Spotting an Iveco ABS fault in time can prevent accidents and bigger repairs. The Iveco ABS warning light on the dashboard is the warning we see most often at the workshop, but it rarely comes alone. A faulty ABS on an Iveco can show up in several ways; the most common signs include:

ABS warning light on

The Iveco ABS warning light stays on in the instrument cluster, sometimes accompanied by loss of the retarder or the trailer brake.

Internal ABS module fault

The diagnostic equipment logs an internal control unit fault — SPN 40B16, with no associated blink code — which points to the unit’s electronics rather than a sensor.

Unpredictable braking

The braking system does not respond as it should. DTC reading and testing of every hydraulic and electronic channel.

Loss of J1939 communication

The scanner logs SPN 40BE7 and the speed, retarder, engine or gearbox data arrive inconsistent, leaving your Iveco’s ABS isolated from the rest of the vehicle.

Nuestro cliente y nosotros estamos infinitamente agradecidos.

Well, 3 months ago they repaired a Seat León module for me, and from the very first moment they treated me in a super professional way. They were quick with the repair and practical with collecting the part and delivering it. No problems so far, I recommend them one hundred per cent.

frequently asked questions about Iveco ABS repair

The fault is most likely in the vehicle rather than the trailer. Code SPN 40B13 points to the trailer brake valve, which is part of the Daily’s own system: while you drive without a trailer coupled, that circuit is not monitored, and the warning light only appears when the ABS detects the connection. Before removing anything, check the trailer connector and the continuity up to the valve; if the code persists with a different trailer, the source is in the control unit or its output stage, and that can be repaired.

The Iveco Daily 35S14 ABS module does not depend on the engine but on the vehicle generation, the type of brakes and whether it has plain ABS or EBS with stability control. Several part numbers coexist within the same Daily range, so the reliable way to identify the part is the label on the unit itself, not the 35S14 trade name. Send us that part number or a photo of the label and we will confirm compatibility before starting the repair.

Yes, they are connected. In the heavy range the ABS controls the retarder to distribute braking, and code SPN 40B0D indicates precisely an open or short circuit in the retarder control (DBR). When the ABS loses that control it disables it for safety, so you are left without auxiliary braking downhill and all the work falls on the service brakes. On mountain routes it should be dealt with immediately, and the source is usually the control unit’s output stage, not the retarder itself.

It could be either, and that is why code SPN 40BE7 is confusing: it does not point to a physical part, but to the speed, retarder, engine or gearbox data arriving inconsistent, or not arriving at all, over the SAE J1939 network. The first step is to rule out the bus (connectors, terminating resistors, another unit flooding the network). If the other modules communicate normally and only the ABS is isolated, the problem lies in its own communication interface, which is a fault that can be repaired at board level.

It is almost always a false alarm. Among its causes, code SPN 40BFE includes excessive wheel slip on a rolling road: with some wheels turning and others not, the ABS interprets a lock-up that cannot occur on the road and logs the error. If it is cleared and does not reappear on the road, there was no fault. There is only cause for concern if it reappears while driving, or if the same SPN 40BFE comes with “no modulators connected” or modulator activation times exceeded, which are genuine internal faults.

Because they are different braking systems. The Daily is a light commercial vehicle with hydraulic brakes and a relatively simple four-channel ABS, whereas the Trakker, Stralis, S-Way or Eurocargo have air brakes managed by EBS: per-wheel modulators, retarder control, trailer brake management and constant communication with the engine and gearbox over the J1939 network. That difference changes the codes, the diagnostic equipment and the control unit’s electronics themselves, so we repair both families but with different processes and test benches.

Yes, there usually is, although the cause is not the time standing itself. Code SPN 40BFB is logged when the ABS detects more than 5 seconds of overvoltage, and that is exactly what happens when you jump-start it with leads, an external booster or a fast charger after a spell standing in the yard: the alternator overexcites to recover a flat or sulphated battery and the voltage goes above the permitted margin. First check the condition of the battery and the alternator regulation; if the voltage is correct and the code comes back, it is the ABS itself that is measuring incorrectly and its power supply stage needs checking.
